Fairtrade Fortnight exists to celebrate and promote Fairtrade products and their producers. Fairtrade is a certification standard for a range of products that seeks to fight poverty and empower communities in poor countries, particularly in industries that are exploited for unpaid or poorly paid labour to create food and clothes. Some of the most common items you might find to be Fairtrade certified are coffee, tea, cocoa, sugar and cotton, but it is not limited to these. For a company or product to be certified, they must meet certain economic, social and environmental criteria, designed to go beyond providing only the essential human rights and give back extra to producer communities. Over the next two weeks, I will be providing more information about different aspects of Fairtrade in detail. Enjoy!

Fair Trade vs Fairtrade

Fair Trade is a global movement that works to alleviate poverty and empower communities through fair trade practices, following the World Fair Trade Organisation's 10 Principles of Fair Trade. Fairtrade itself is more specific, and has a unique symbol which definitively identifies products as certified according to the Fairtrade standards of financial, environmental and social ethics. In addition, the black Fairtrade mark indicates that all ingredients that can be sourced Fairtrade certified are, while a white Fairtrade mark with an ingredient indicated means that only that ingredient is Fairtrade sourced and the rest that could be Fairtrade certified are not.
