The Dance

The Dance

I am learning to dance

It's something that's always been a part of me really

But repression has tamped it down-

movement and thought and rhythm and desire

.

Finally at a wedding witnessing queer joy I was convinced to turn thought into action

.

It's quite simple, once you get into it

Follow the steps, follow the music, relax, let it flow through you

I've never been good at that

.

You and I dance together

In those moments the world dissolves and all I want to focus on is you

Yet I have to focus on the steps and the music and the class and my fears

It's so well choreographed you'd think we have it all sorted out

But when the music ends I don't know how you feel

.

We people watch, nudge each other excitedly when we see fellow queers join for dance lessons

Do they think the same of us?

.

Do you?

.

Or is it better, safer, smarter, to let it stay a dance
